Banannie Bread — The Best Banana Bread Recipe From Scratch, Named After the OG, Mamamia Ann
Named after my Mom — Mamamia Ann — this banana bread has been a staple in our family since I was a wee one. Mom's version? A tried and true recipe she's been making forever. Simple. Reliable. From scratch. Gloriously delicious every single time.
At Frosting Bakeshop, Banannie Bread was on the menu every single day — and more often than not, our regulars bought it by the loaf rather than by the slice. If a regular didn't get their slice? They were seriously upset. That's how good this banana bread is.
Here's the OG recipe with my two tweaks marked — because when you're a former bakeshop owner, you can't help yourself:
✔️ The butter — Mom's original calls for 2 sticks. I use 1. Still gloriously delicious and a little lighter. You're welcome. ✔️ The vanilla — always, always double it. Non-negotiable. Obviously. And always — ALWAYS — a generous dusting of confectioners sugar on top once cooled. That's not optional.
One more thing — the batter freezes beautifully. I always make a double batch and freeze what we don't use. Thaw overnight and it tastes like it was just made. Perfect for lacrosse tourney weekends when you come home with more bananas than you know what to do with.

Yield: 1 loaf (approx. 35-40 ounces)
Bake: 75 minutes
Sugar | 10.6 | ounces |
All-purpose flour | 8.5 | ounces |
Butter | 1 | cup (½ cup is just as delish) |
Eggs | 2 | large |
Baking soda | 1 | teaspoon |
Salt | 0.5 | teaspoon |
Sour milk | 0.25 | cup |
Vanilla extract | 1 | teaspoon (2 is an absolute MUST) |
Bananas | 3 | Small (11 ounces) |
Spray pan with butter spray. Beat sugar and butter and add eggs. Whisk all dry ingredients in a separate bowl and set aside. Add a drop of white vinegar to ¼ cup of milk to make it “sour”. Add sour milk and vanilla to wet ingredients. Once mixed, add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Fold in bananas. Pour into loaf pan. Sprinkle confectioners’ sugar on top of cool bread.
